Parallettes Exercises for Gymnasts: Strength and Control at Home

Gymatics ParaBar gymnastics parallettes

Parallettes can be useful for floor-based gymnastics conditioning because they create a raised support position for simple strength and body-control exercises.

They are not a replacement for coaching, and home training should stay within skills the gymnast can control safely. The best use of parallettes at home is often basic conditioning rather than attempting advanced gymnastics elements.

1. Straight-arm support hold

Start between the bars with straight arms, shoulders active and feet lightly supported if needed. The goal is to learn a stable support position without collapsing through the shoulders.

2. Tuck support

From support, bring the knees towards the chest while keeping the arms straight. Beginners can keep one or both feet lightly touching the floor and progress gradually.

3. Seated compression lifts

Sit between or just behind the parallettes with straight legs. Press down through the bars and attempt to lift one heel, then both heels, while maintaining posture. Small movements are enough to train the compression pattern.

4. Incline plank hold

Place the hands on the bars and walk the feet back into a controlled plank. Keep the body in one line and avoid letting the hips drop.

5. Slow shoulder-shift drill

From a supported plank, gently shift the shoulders a small distance forwards and back while maintaining control. The range should stay comfortable and appropriate to the gymnast's level.

6. L-sit progression

A full L-sit is demanding. Start with bent knees, one leg extended or feet lightly supported, then progress only when the gymnast can keep strong shoulder support and controlled posture.

7. Pressing strength

Coach-approved push-up variations using parallettes can provide a neutral hand position and extra range. The difficulty should match the gymnast's current strength.

8. Body-shape holds away from the bars

Parallettes work is most useful when combined with basic hollow-body, arch and compression training. See our upstart and kip conditioning guide for examples of those supporting shapes.

Using ParaBar™

Gymatics® ParaBar™ is our gymnastics parallette designed for strength, control and fundamentals. Use it on a suitable flat surface with enough clear space around the gymnast.

Keep home training simple

A short conditioning block might include support holds, tuck supports and compression work. Stop when shape deteriorates rather than chasing extra repetitions.

For a broader home programme, read our safe gymnastics conditioning at home guide.
