Beginner Gymnastics Kit List: 10 Things You Actually Need

Starting gymnastics does not require a huge shopping list. In the early stages, simple and practical usually beats buying advanced equipment before a gymnast needs it.

This guide covers the basics that are useful for many beginners. Always check your club's own kit policy because requirements vary between programmes.

1. Training clothes or leotard

Choose close-fitting sports clothing that allows the coach to see body positions clearly and does not catch on equipment. Many clubs have their own guidance on leotards, shorts or leggings.

2. Water bottle

A named bottle with a secure lid is one of the easiest essentials to get right.

3. Small gym bag

A beginner does not need a huge holdall. A compact bag with one or two internal pockets is usually enough for the basics.

4. Chalk, if the club uses it

Not every beginner needs personal chalk immediately, so ask the coach first. If personal chalk is useful, Gymatics® Sports Chalk is available as standard and Mini blocks.

Our beginner's guide to gymnastics chalk explains how chalk is used and why club rules matter.

5. A dedicated chalk holder

If chalk is going into the bag, containing it makes life much easier. ChalkBuddy® is designed around standard block chalk, while ChalkBuddy® Mini is the compact option for Gymatics Mini Chalk Blocks.

6. Hair ties and clips

For longer hair, keep spares permanently in the bag. Hair should be secured in the way the club requests before training starts.

7. Simple hand protection only when needed

Beginners do not automatically need advanced grips. Depending on the programme, bar gloves or wristbands may be introduced later. Follow the coach's advice rather than buying based on age alone.

8. Tape

A small roll of sports tape can be useful to keep in the bag once the gymnast is doing more regular training. It should be used appropriately and according to coach or parent guidance.

9. A suitable snack for longer sessions

If the club allows snacks and the session is long enough to need one, pack something familiar and easy to manage. SnackBuddy® is a compact container for suitable dry snacks.

10. Name labels

Gymnastics centres are full of similar bottles, bags and accessories. Name the items you would be annoyed to lose.

What a beginner usually does not need straight away

Advanced grips, specialist home apparatus and large quantities of training accessories are rarely the first priority. A better approach is to let the gymnast begin training, see what the coach recommends, then add equipment when there is a real reason for it.

Build the kit gradually

A good beginner setup is easy to carry, easy to organise and suited to the gymnast's actual sessions. You can also read our five training tips for beginner gymnasts and our complete gymnastics bag checklist.
