Bar loops are a specialist gymnastics training accessory used in supervised strap-bar work. If you are new to gymnastics, they can look like a simple pair of straps, but they should be treated as coached equipment rather than a general-purpose grip aid.
What do bar loops do?
Bar loops are used as part of a strap-bar setup to help a gymnast remain connected to the bar during specific coached swing and technique drills. The exact setup and exercise depend on the gym, apparatus and coach.
Are bar loops the same as grips?
No. Standard gymnastics grips sit between the hand and bar during normal bar work. Bar loops are used for a different training setup and should not be treated as interchangeable with grips or gloves.
If you are looking for everyday bar protection, read our guide to wristbands, bar gloves and grips.
Why sizing matters
Bar loops need to be appropriate for the gymnast and the strap-bar setup being used. Do not guess sizing based only on age. The coach or club should guide the gymnast on what is suitable.
Why supervision matters
Strap-bar training involves specialised equipment and technique. Bar loops should be used only in the way the coach intends, on suitable gymnastics apparatus and with appropriate supervision.
What should you check before training?
- The loops are the correct size for the gymnast and setup
- The material and stitching are in good condition
- The coach is happy with the setup
- The apparatus is being used as intended

Keep specialist kit separate
It is useful to keep bar loops, wristbands and other bar equipment together in one section of the gym bag so they can be checked before training.
Our gymnastics bag essentials guide covers a simple way to organise the rest of your kit.
