Gymnastics Chalk Holder Guide: Block Chalk vs Powdered Chalk

Chalk is simple. Carrying it around a gym bag is not.

Gymnasts commonly use chalk to help keep their hands dry and improve the feel of their grip, but the best way to carry it depends on whether you prefer a solid block or loose powder.

This guide explains the practical difference between the two formats and the type of holder that suits each one.

What is block chalk?

Block chalk is compressed gymnastics chalk formed into a solid block. It is easy to hold, easy to portion and less likely to pour everywhere than loose powder. The downside is that blocks can crack or crumble when they are repeatedly thrown into a kit bag.

Gymatics® Sports Chalk is available as a standard block and a Mini Block option.

What is powdered chalk?

Powdered chalk is already loose, so it is quick to access and easy to distribute across the hands. Because it is loose, the container matters. A lid that opens inside a kit bag can turn one training accessory into a full-bag cleaning job.

Gymatics also offers powdered chalk in a 120g pouch.

Which is better: block or powder?

There is no universal winner. The best format is the one that fits the gymnast's preference, club rules and training routine.

  • Choose block chalk if you like a solid piece that is easy to hold and control.
  • Choose powdered chalk if you prefer loose chalk that is immediately ready to spread across the hands.
  • Ask your coach if your gym has specific rules about chalk types or where chalk can be used.

How do you carry block chalk without making a mess?

This is exactly the problem ChalkBuddy® was designed to solve. Rather than leaving a block loose in a bag or wrapping it in temporary packaging, ChalkBuddy provides a dedicated reusable holder that protects the chalk and keeps it easy to find.

The idea is deliberately simple: give the chalk its own home.

How do you carry powdered chalk?

PowderBuddy® applies the same organised approach to loose powder. It is a dedicated powder chalk dispenser designed for gymnasts who prefer powdered chalk but do not want an open bag or improvised tub floating around their kit.

What about liquid chalk?

Liquid chalk is another option used across gymnastics and other grip-based sports. It applies as a liquid and dries on the hands. Some athletes like the reduced loose dust; others prefer the feel and routine of traditional chalk.

You can view Gymatics® Liquid Chalk if that format better suits your training.

Keep chalk use sensible

More chalk is not automatically better. Use the amount appropriate for the apparatus and follow your coach's guidance. Clubs may also have their own rules to reduce unnecessary dust and keep equipment clean.

The simplest way to choose

If you already know which chalk format you like, choose the holder to match it:

The important part is not making chalk complicated. Keep it protected, keep it organised and make sure it is there when training starts.
