How to Use Gymnastics Chalk: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Gymnastics chalk is one of the simplest pieces of kit in the sport, but using it well still comes down to a few good habits.

This guide explains what chalk is, how to apply it sensibly and how to keep it from taking over the inside of your gym bag.

What is gymnastics chalk?

Sports chalk is usually magnesium carbonate. It is used to help absorb moisture from the hands and create a drier contact surface on apparatus.

If you want the background, read our guide to why gymnastics chalk works.

Step 1: Check the club rules

Some clubs provide chalk, some expect gymnasts to bring their own and some limit where it can be used. Follow the coach and venue rules first.

Step 2: Apply a small amount

Rub or spread chalk across the areas of the hands used for the apparatus. The aim is a light, useful coating rather than thick layers of loose dust.

Step 3: Remove obvious excess

If loose chalk is falling from the hands, gently tap off the excess before using the apparatus. More is not automatically better.

Step 4: Reapply when needed

Chalk may need topping up during longer sessions as the hands become warm or sweaty. Reapply between sets rather than constantly adding more.

Step 5: Keep the chalk contained

Standard block chalk is easy to carry when it has a dedicated place. ChalkBuddy® is designed around a standard block, while PowderBuddy® is for powdered chalk.

For smaller blocks, ChalkBuddy® Mini is designed for Gymatics® Mini Chalk Blocks.

Block or powder?

Both can work well. The choice usually comes down to preference, club rules and how the gymnast likes to apply chalk.

See our block chalk vs powdered chalk guide for a side-by-side explanation.

How do you stop chalk ruining a gym bag?

Use a dedicated holder, keep it closed between sessions and store it in the same pocket every time. Avoid relying on damaged temporary packaging for weeks on end.

We have a full guide on keeping gymnastics chalk contained in your kit bag.

What if chalk irritates the skin?

Stop using the product and speak to a parent, coach or appropriate healthcare professional if there is ongoing irritation or a skin problem. Do not train through painful or damaged skin just to complete a session.

Keep it simple

Use the amount you need, follow the club rules and put the chalk away properly afterwards. That is usually all a beginner needs to know.
