How to Choose Your First Gymnastics Grip for Bars

02 September, 2026

Choosing your first gymnastics grip for bars is one of those decisions that feels more complicated than it needs to be. There are different styles, materials, and fits — and plenty of conflicting advice online. Here's a straightforward guide to help you make the right call for your level and training style.

Why Bar Grips Matter

As your bar training intensifies, your hands take a significant amount of load. Rips — tears to the skin on the palm and fingers — become more frequent, and each one can sideline you from bars for days. Grips act as a protective layer between your skin and the bar, reducing friction where it causes damage while maintaining the grip you need for control.

Types of Gymnastics Grips

Bar gloves are the most beginner-friendly option. They cover the full palm and fingers, providing protection across the whole hand. Our Gymatics® Bar Gloves are made from cotton for breathability — important during longer sessions where sweat build-up becomes an issue. Cotton also gives a natural feel on the bar, so you don't lose the tactile feedback that helps you develop technique.

Dowel grips feature a small dowel near the fingers that helps the grip fold around the bar. They are generally introduced as a gymnast progresses to more demanding bar work. Whether and when to use them should be discussed with your coach, as requirements vary by gymnast, discipline and level.

Fit Is Everything

A grip that's too large will shift mid-skill, which is both dangerous and counterproductive. A grip that's too tight restricts movement and blood flow. Measure across the widest part of your palm and refer to the sizing guide for any grip you're considering. Always follow the manufacturer’s sizing guide. If you’re unsure between sizes, check the fit with your coach before training in them.

Pairing Grips with Chalk

Grips don't replace chalk — they work alongside it. You still chalk up before bars; the chalk goes on the grip surface, not just your bare hand. Our ChalkBuddy® Sports Chalk Holder makes this quick and mess-free between rotations, so you can focus on your training rather than hunting for a chalk block.

For wrist support alongside your grips, our Extra Wide Wristbands add stability without restricting the range of motion you need on bars.

When to Make the Switch

If you're training bars 2–3 times per week and experiencing regular rips, it's time. If you're still in foundational skill-building and training once a week or less, develop your bare-hand strength first. Strong, conditioned hands make for better long-term bar technique than grips introduced too early.
